Hypnosis
is the means or a way to introduce a deepened
state of consciousness (trance) that is most often
combined with a profound sense of relaxation and
calm. The trance resembles natural, spontaneously
occurring states that can be also be experienced
primarily when falling asleep, waking up, daydreaming,
reading a book while deeply concentrated or watching
a film: perception is so concentrated and the
concentration of the consciousness is so focused
on a specific thing that all other surrounding
signals are no longer consciously registered.
In this state, fear-causing stimuli can be transformed
in such as way that they no longer burden one’s
attention. In dental hypnoses, attention is guided
towards a pleasant, positive experience in which
patients can let themselves be treated while calm
and relaxed.
An important factor in this is the trusting relationship
in the treatment. The foundation for medical hypnotherapy
is the voluntary collaboration between patient
and care provider. Going into a trance or state
of deep relaxation and re-emerging from it is
an entirely voluntary process – it has nothing
to do with volition nor does it limit in any way
one’s will. Patients are actively involved
in the relaxation and are taught how to induce
this state of calm and relaxation on their own.
