What’s involved in a root canal
treatment?
In treating the canals we use special
hand instruments and machine-run equipment
that allow for an optimal root canal
treatment. To avoid breakages, the
machines’ operation is controlled
by microprocessors and shuts off automatically
if the instrument becomes stuck. At
the same time, the correct lengths
of the individual root canals are
determined by impedance measurements
so that fewer x-rays are needed for
monitoring. The instruments that we
use are highly flexible and allow
us to even reach roots that are very
crooked.
In addition to treating all of the
existing root canals, what is also
highly important for a successful
treatment of the tooth is the cleaning
and disinfecting of the canals. This
is done using a special ultrasonic
device. The medication that must be
inserted into the root canal undergoes
strong ultrasonic activation and disinfects
even the hard-to-reach areas in the
canal. The success of the treatment
is checked under the microscope and
after the treatment, throrough disinfecting
and rinsing are complete, the canal
is sealed up tightly. A number of
varying alternatives are available
here, and one is selected based on
the indication. Generally, a so-called
warm filling technique is used, which
involves filing the canal system incrementally
with a fluid material. Here, it is
particularly important that the root
canals be filled up entirely. Otherwise,
inflammation may develop and the tooth
cannot be kept. There is evidence
showing that when a dental microscope
is used here, the success rate for
the procedure reaches almost 95%,
while one out of every three procedures
with standard treatment methods lead
to a re-occurrence of an inflammation
and, as a result, to the loss of the
tooth.
To prevent new bacteria from entering
the tooth through the mouth during
treatment, the tooth is isolated using
a dental dam. Since the tooth is numbed,
there is no pain involved in the treatment.
A thorough root canal treatment takes
time, and at our office, you have
the option of wearing a head-mounted
display for viewing films and relaxing
images during the procedure to keep
you busy and help you relax.
